Late Bloomer

I will not add any commentary to the facts I am about to report; however, please feel free to apply your own interpretation. This story has so many metaphors that could be drawn from it.

"Our" Tree
Now that we've lived here for four months, I can honestly say that Brandon and I lucked out with the placement of our apartment. We are very near the main road, but not on it; we have a lovely bay window that faces outwards, instead of just facing another apartment building; we have two parking lots and don't have to deal with street parking; AND, we have a lovely tree that blossoms, and doesn't just leaf.
That may not sound like such a big deal, but just step into our apartment for a minute...actually, walk up the steps to our apartment from the parking lot...oh, wait, all you have to do is drive past our building on the street and, KABLAM!, there is "our" tree, in all its blossoming glory. As you can see from our new blog background pic, the tree takes up our entire bay window view, and it has become the topic of much conversation and the object of much observation.
"What were you talking about and watching for on the tree?" you may be wondering. WELL...for almost an entire month, while all of the other trees and flowers were blossoming, "our" tree sat there, stagnant. Ok, not exactly stagnant-- it had some little leaves and a ton of buds-- but we had no idea if it would flower or leaf, and we especially had no idea when. And we were so anxious about what was going to happen!
Our neighbor, a biologist, told us a few weeks ago that "our" tree (ok, it is just as much her tree as ours, because she sees it out of her window too!) was a Kwanzan Cherry Tree and that it would definitely blossom. She even said it would be more spectacular than the other cherry trees! Every day we kept checking to see if the blossoms had burst open...and then, one day, when the temperature had creeped above the fifties...

We thought, and hoped, "our" tree would have some blossoms, but not in our wildest imaginations did we picture it exploding with hundreds of pink puff balls! "Our" tree is a late bloomer, and it was well worth the wait. We can't wait to see what it will look like in the summer and fall, but for now we are going to just enjoy.

  1. Every year I wait for those late bloomers! We have four or five that line the street going to our house and they FINALLY bloomed! I was so excited because they are truly beautiful--a brighter, more vibrant pink than other trees. Spring is the best time of year!

  2. That is a beautiful tree! Hi Maggie! Thanks for sending me that photo of me and your mom and Scott. Could you send me the link to the Kodak site so I can see the rest of the photos? My camera's battery died in the begiining of the reception so I don't have many photos from that great day. Love Patty (patriciapappas1@comcast.net)

  3. That's great! I love that it is the new background picture. Do you ever go outside and gather a handful of the flower petals (from the ground or directly off the tree) in your hand like a snowball and then throw them at eachother with as much force as possible. I may do that. Don't worry, it doesn't hurt. But is is pretty fun...

  5. I love the tree! So beautiful! We don't have a tree and I'm a little jealous. I guess our "little forest" in the back isn't bad. But the tree is pretty spectacular!

  7. Yay for late bloomers! I LOVE them! And this is crazy, Mags. I didn't recognize it in the first pictures all bare, but now that it's blossomed, I realized something- we have the SAME exact tree in our front yard- and I can see it out my front window! We are SO connected! Love you!
